Preparing for Life:
Many incarcerated residents have multiple addictions to alcohol and/or other drugs, weak problem-solving and self-management skills, poor parenting skills, and low self-esteem. Residents have also typically established poor priorities in life and are involved in dysfunctional relationships. Faith communities play a significant role in the lives of residents by providing hope, compassion, and helping them to understand and internalize ultimate issues. The Winfield Spiritual Life Center (WSLC) provides opportunities for residents from diverse faiths to develop and restore relationships with God, their families, communities, and crime victims.
Why a Spiritual Life Center is Needed and the Benefits it Offers:
The Winfield Correctional Facility is constructing a freestanding Spiritual Life Center (SLC) with approximately 10,000 square feet of floor space. The design incorporates a 200-seat sanctuary with an audio/visual suite, an office space for the Chaplain, four classrooms, a multipurpose area with seating for dining, a complete kitchen for event hosting, and a religious resource room with a selection of books, CD’s, DVD’s, and other resources the residents may utilize.
The project will be accomplished through the efforts of volunteers and facility staff using the residents of WCF alongside contract labor. Funding will come exclusively from donations received from individuals, corporations, and grants from private foundations. Other funding has come through the residents who will be conducting various fundraisers from within the facility.
Current and Planned Religious Programming
Chaplaincy Services are designed to assist residents affiliated with all recognized faith groups/denominations to achieve individual spiritual growth. Residents are afforded opportunities to participate in their primary worship service and any special services/activities open to the general population. Various counseling services are also available including individual, marriage, parenting, crisis, grief, and spiritual counseling.
Having the WSLC will also provide flexible spaces to expand self-help and support group meetings and activities such as Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous, Incarcerated Veterans Support Group, Reaching Out From Within, and so on.
Utilization of Donations & Volunteer Services
Classroom Curriculum and Books: Funding and volunteers are needed for classes with subjects on spiritual growth, parenting, marriage, life skills, self-help, grief, and addiction recovery.
Building and Equipment Updates: Funding will be needed to update furniture and electronic equipment used for classes, worship services, and programming.
Library Updates: Monetary and material donations help keep the library inventory current with newly released books, videos, and digital media.
Special Events: Funding and volunteers will be necessary to cover the costs associated with special events such as Brothers In Blue Weekends, concerts, seminars, and banquets held at the facility.
