Winfield, KS, January 6, 2014 – The Power of the Purse – a women’s giving circle established with Legacy Regional Community Foundation – marked a $100,000 giving milestone in November 2013.

Power of the Purse (POP) awarded six grants this fall. With those grants, its cumulative granting over the six years since its start topped the $100,000 mark. Established in 2007, POP has a mission to better the lives of women and children. It operates by combining membership contributions to form a fund from which grants are awarded. Some of the organizations that POP has awarded grants to over its history are the Community Learning Center, Cowley County Human Society, the Cowley Cares Coalition, Family Life Services and Safe Homes among other organizations.

Gayle McPherson, director of Eagle Nest, Inc. in Winfield, says, “The help that POP provides to us is invaluable. The families in our programs are learning skills that are changing their lives and their futures with personal support and hard work. POP has been a major supporter of our efforts.”

Soroptimist of Arkansas City president Deborah Hunt agrees. “We share a mission with POP to help women and girls in our community. Their financial gifts enable our volunteers to do more projects with more people and we appreciate their efforts.”

“The Power of the Purse demonstrates the impact that is possible from combined resources,” say Winfield CPA Patty Neises, POP’s president. “Every POP member makes at least a $400 annual contribution. Multiply that by our 40 person membership and we can make a difference in Cowley County.”
