Arkansas City/Winfield, KS: #Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 28, #Giving Tuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the United States) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season. #Giving Tuesday is set aside to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities by giving in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. This global philanthropic movement was started by 92Y – a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back. Conceptualized by 92Y, #Giving Tuesday is a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen community and encourage giving. In 2016, the fifth year of #Giving Tuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

As a movement that is fueled by social media and collaboration, Legacy Foundation with other local area nonprofits encourages community members to share the #Giving Tuesday message as well as support their favorite charitable projects. “When we give to local nonprofit organizations that we know are working in our community,” stated Yazmin Wood-Executive Director of Legacy Foundation, “then we know our gifts – large or small – are helping our neighbors and doing good work in positively changing Cowley County. With limited resources in our community, it’s important to retain local wealth and maximize its impact.” There are many ways to give to or through Legacy Foundation in order to keep your gift at work right here at home.
