Winfield, KS, June 2, 2015 – Madison McDowell, a 2013 graduate of Arkansas City High School, is the recipient of the Young Philanthropist’s Scholarship, provided by The Power of the Purse (POP).

McDowell will receive $1,500 towards her education from the women’s giving circle. A graduate of Cowley County Community College, she will continue her education at Wichita State University in the fall to study Secondary Education and Mathematics.

McDowell is a youth group leader and volunteer at the First Presbyterian Church in Arkansas City. She founded the Glen Vick Memorial Pancake Feed to help raise money for the kids in her youth group to go to camp at Westminster Woods, where she also volunteers. McDowell is passionate about volunteering at the Five Loaves Meal Ministry, which is an organization that prepares meals for people in the community on Tuesday nights. McDowell says “My favorite part about volunteering at Five Loaves is reaching out to the young children that attend. Before volunteering I was completely unaware of the amount of children that are in need of a meal every day.”

At Cowley County Community College, McDowell was a Student Ambassador and a member of the CAATS in a Box program in which students raise funding for and awareness of those in our community struggling to have basic needs by living in a cardboard box for 24 hours.

Power of the Purse has a mission to better the lives of women and children. Established in 2007 with Legacy Regional Community Foundation, POP operates by combining membership contributions to form a pool of funds from which grants are awarded. This is the second year of the Young Philanthropist’s Scholarship.
